Topic: Announcements / Core Datacenter Move - April 17th

Spliced Networks will be moving its core datacenter facility from Atlanta to Jacksonville. The Jacksonville facility offers faster transit to our other facilities and higher performance servers. The move will commence at 1am EST on Thursday April 17th, we expect to have the move completed by 5am EST on Thursday April 17th. During the move, dynamic web applications, including this forum may be unavailable for a short period of time. Only the dynamic web applications are being moved to Jacksonville, other services such as email will be moved to our Athens, Ohio facility.

Topic: Announcements / Phase III Network Rollout

Spliced Networks will begin the third phase of its network rollout on Wednesday April 2nd 2008. This phase will increase security and reliability by migrating from a mix of different Linux distributions to AppOS. AppOS is Spliced Networks’ secure Linux based appliance platform. We expect the upgrades to be complete within 48 hours. After this phase is completed, we will begin to roll out new content for Spliced Networks, o3 media networks and other sites.

Topic: o3 media / o3 magazine issue 9 :: Errata / Feedback

Nico,

No o3 magazine is not dead. Its been on a bit of a hiatus as we’ve poured a lot of resources into getting AppOS 4.0 released. We had to redo all of the content for Issues 10 thru 14 for legal reasons (our previous editor, was less freelance than he had led us to believe).

The good news is that we are upgrading our infrastructure to AppOS over the next couple of days, so you can expect issue 10, along with a lot more o3 content (including the o3mn site), this month.

Thanks

Topic: o3 media / New o3 magazine subscriber services

The current “subscriber services” for o3 magazine (LOGIN) will be phased out this week.
The “LOGIN” system was always intended as a stop-gap measure, with limited development happening with the Ruby Asset Manager, we are
switching to a better system.

The new system will provide:

- Dedicated o3 forums
- Ticket tracking for o3 content
- Source code access for projects mentioned in the articles (via svn and ftp)

A new system for advertisers is expected to roll out in the next 2 weeks.

Topic: Announcements / Phase II Network Rollout Update

Phase II of our production network rollout will be completed tomorrow – Monday February 4th 2008. The full network will be in production for everyone to enjoy around noon EST tomorrow. Phase II brings on-line additional bandwidth and servers in San Jose, California. This west coast presence not only dramatically increases the performance for US consumers, but it will increase performance for some Asia-Pac users as well.

Phase II brings on-line an additional 200MBit/sec of bandwidth in Munich, Germany, as well as a second datacenter presence there. The additional bandwidth and servers should dramatically improve performance for our European users.

Phase II has decentralized our dynamic web applications and database servers from our Atlanta datacenter. We are now operating three “core” data centers – Atlanta, San Jose and Munich, along with “edge” deployments in San Jose, Houston, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, London, Munich, and Hong Kong.

Phase II has brought improved internal routing, using open source bgpd and zebra for internal routing, many thanks to the Quagga project! Additional redundancy has been added with HAproxy, enabling edge deployments to attach to two “core” locations for load balancing dynamic web applications (such as these forums).

Topic: Miscellaneous Discussion / Less Sticky topics

fixed (hopefully).... sorry I use 1280×1024 (minimum) and mostly resolutions much higher than that. So there was still plenty of room below the sticky threads on my screen!! :)

Topic: o3 media / o3 news beta goes live

Based on feedback we’ve received, the beta went well. The site is moving to an automated editing system this week, in preparation we took some of the back-end off line which is why you have not seen any news on the site for a few days. Time permitting the beta2 site will go live in a few days.

Topic: o3 media / More instructions would be nice

The Open Office articles were slightly below par for our publication. The good news is that you won’t see those types of articles in o3 magazine again. If you want to see them, check out Linux.com where Mayank is now writing for full time.

Topic: o3 media / o3news enters second phase of beta

The Open Source Enterprise News site (http://www.o3news.com) has entered its second phase of our beta program. We have fixed a number of issues with the back end processing system. As part of the second phase, we will fix the indexing system, which is currently broken (well poorly maintained). The stability fixes though puts us on track for fully automating the system by December 1st.

Stay tuned!

Topic: o3 media / HTML issues

We have come up with a neat way to preserve the magazine format, but without having to resort to PDF (for those who do not want to use PDF viewers). The o3 magazine site will be upgraded this month to include the new system along with the new subscriber services.

Enjoy!

Topic: o3 media / Issue 8 - Scalable SMTP networks

The term N+1 is used to define scalable solutions, so N can be any value. The solution should be able to handle as many relay servers as you can throw at it.

Topic: AppOS / AppOS 4.0 blocking events

The highly anticipated public release of AppOS is very close at hand. A couple of milestones needed to be reached before the release, two of those have been reached, and the final two are being actively worked on.

=> AppOS trademark registration [Registered as of 10/09/2007]
=> Spliced Networks IEEE OUI assignment [Assigned as of 10/10/2007]
=> Retrospectiva / Subversion / FTP [ETA: 10/29/2007]
=> Additional "Core" Data centers [ETA: 10/22/2007]

Note: Spliced Networks uses a globally distributed network to provide services. The network uses two types of deployment – edge and core. Edge data centers consist of servers that provide static content, and pass back dynamic content requests to the nearest core data center. The core data centers have many more servers, higher bandwidth. The core data center deployments process the requests and forwarded them back to the edge servers, where they are typically cached.

The additional “core” data centers are designed to provide fast response times and geographically “local” resources. The solution also provides redundancy, enabling edge servers to hit alternative core servers if the default is down or over capacity.

Topic: AppOS / AppOS trademark

AppOS® is now a registered trademark of Spliced Networks LLC. This was one of the milestones we were waiting for before the release of AppOS 4.0.

Topic: Announcements / Phase II Network expansion begins

Spliced Networks is pleased to announce that the second phase of the production network expansion has begun. We have doubled capacity at our San Jose (US-West) location. We have added an additional 200MBit/sec and a new data center location in Germany.

Resources at our Atlanta location will be replicated out to San Jose and Germany, which should drastically improve the performance of our dynamic web applications for users outside of the United States.

Topic: o3 media / o3 magazine issue 9 :: Errata / Feedback

Please post issue 9 errata / feedback here.

We build o3 magazine in 300 dpi, the 72 dpi screen shots lost too much quality to meet our standards when imported into Scribus. We build the magazine in 300 dpi, as it is sent to various places for printing.

To get around this problem (and to prevent inflating the size of the PDF to crazy levels). We will be setting up screenshots.o3magazine.com later in the week. I will announce when it is ready. The format for issues will be :

Topic: o3 media / o3 magazine :: Website Feedback

I activated your account, along with a couple of others that were pending. It looks like the software wasn’t sending out the notifications to the administration team that there were pending activations. It should work now, and I fixed the software. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

We are revising the system over the weekend, so next week there should be additional subscriber services, including the return of email notification. The current “login” system for subscribers is more for subscribers to get access to custom content, and share configurations / solutions with other subscribers.

Thanks

Topic: o3 media / o3 news beta goes live

We have just launched a public beta of o3 news, a new enterprise / open source daily news site. This is currently running off the US servers (no GSLB), but that will change over the course of the next couple of days.

In the mean time, enjoy the news site. Features such as RSS and Scrolling Ticker will be available shortly.

Thanks
